The 2025 Sustainability Report documents how GSI's unique change model is driving measurable environmental and social progress across member companies, and how farmed salmon contributes to healthy and sustainable food systems around the world.

For us, progress is key. But we always believe we can do better.

We use this report to guide our efforts and prioritize where continued collaboration and innovation can result in farmed salmon that’s raised to be better for people and planet.

Of aligned, consistent, industry-wide reporting on sustainability performance

The GSI Sustainability Report is the only place where industry-wide sustainability performance is tracked against aligned and consistent metrics for 11 companies in each of the key farming regions. It is a significant opportunity for us to transparently report and benchmark progress, but most importantly to understand where continued efforts are needed.

3 New Feed Metrics

GSI members have added:

Percentage of marine ingredients derived from trimmings
Percentage of novel ingredients used in aquafeed
Percentage of soy sourced that is verified as low-risk for deforestation and conversion based on ASC Feed Standard methodology

These new metrics reflect our ongoing journey to improve feed sourcing through the use of certified ingredients and novel ingredients, as well as enhance the traceability and transparency in our supply chains so you can track progress as it happens.

68% Reduction

In average use of antibiotics for salmonids since 2013

Through continued research, innovation, knowledge sharing and improved best-practices, GSI members have significantly reduced the use of antibiotics across operations — with a 22% reduction in the last 5 years alone.

79% Reduction

In average combined medicinal sea lice treatments since 2013

Medicinal treatments remain a tool for controlling sea lice when non-medicinal methods aren’t enough on their own. But through continued innovation in farming operations and a focus on development of holistic management practices, their use is decreasing. In the last 5 years, use has reduced 63%.

New Metric

Non-medicinal sea lice management methods now reported

As we strive to accelerate development and adoption of new technologies and approaches to sea lice management without the use of medicines, we now report on the average percentage of farms utilizing such technologies.

What GSI, and the results of this Report, show us is that pre-competitive collaboration between producers, feed manufacturers and with external partners – is what drives the change at the speed and scale our planet needs.

Nutrition

Salmon is a nutrient-rich food and contributes protein, healthy fats including omega-3s, and several important vitamins and minerals such as vitamins D, B12, and B6.

Environmental Performance

With continuing improvements, farmed salmon is one of the most eco-efficient animal proteins when comparing metrics including carbon footprint and feed conversion ratio.

Health Benefits

Emerging research highlights that eating fish that are high in EPA + DHA like farmed salmon has a number of health benefits for people of all ages.

Improving efficiency in feed

With greater efficiency in feeding, we can reduce our inputs and maximise our outputs — meaning we can maintain farmed salmon's nutrient profile, and reduce our footprint. This is possible through continued evolutions in feed ingredient sourcing and innovations around feeding strategy.

Since 2013, we have been able to reduce the average use of fish oil by 31% and fish meal by 64%.

Of members' average production is Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certified

GSI members are committed to making significant improvements in the sustainability of our salmon farming operations. We use ASC's Salmon Standard as the gold standard for optimal environmental and social performance to benchmark and measure our progress. With nearly two-thirds of our members' production ASC certified, it means increasing the availability of responsibly raised farmed salmon for consumers around the world.
