Executive Summary

The 2024 Sustainability Report documents how GSI’s unique change model is driving measurable environmental progress across member companies and contributing to healthy and sustainable food systems around the world. While we are pleased to see progress, we recognize there is still a lot more to be done. We use this report to guide our efforts and prioritize where continued collaboration and innovation can result in farmed salmon that’s raised to be better for people and planet.

Years of aligned, consistent, industry-wide reporting on sustainability performance

The GSI Sustainability Report is the only place where industry-wide sustainability performance is tracked against aligned and consistent metrics for 14 companies in each of the key farming regions. It is a significant opportunity for us to transparently report and benchmark progress, but most importantly to understand where continued efforts are needed.

Years of improving efficiency in feed

Resulting in 46% decrease in the average use of combined fish meal and fish oil since 2013, and a 15% decrease in the average use of combined fish meal and fish oil since 2023. Through evolutions in feed ingredient sourcing and innovations around feeding strategy, farmed salmon is a highly nutritious protein rich in nutrients and omega-3s. Continuing to improve the sustainability of feed ingredients while maintaining salmon’s nutrient profile is a main priority for us as responsible farmers.

GSI members are committed to making significant improvements in the sustainability of our salmon farming operations. We use ASC's Salmon Standard as the gold standard for optimal environmental and social performance to benchmark and measure our progress. With nearly two-thirds of our members’ production Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certified, it means increasing the availability of responsibly raised farmed salmon for consumers around the world.

Reduction in average use of antibiotics for salmonids since 2013

Through continued research, innovation, knowledge sharing and improved best-practices, GSI members have significantly reduced the use of antibiotics across operations. Good fish health and welfare of the fish in our care is our top priority. With continued advancements, we can further reduce this number and support optimal fish welfare.

Through continued innovations in farming operations and a focus on holistic non-medicinal approaches to risk management, GSI members are demonstrating a reduction in both bath and in-feed treatments when it comes to managing sea lice.
